Description: |
The improvement in this this patent is a serrated inner face on the bar with the hook jaw, and a toothed "stopper" that acts as a bearing surface for the other bar, and which has teeth to fit the serrations on the hook jawed bar. When the thumb screw on the pivot is loosened, the jaw position can be adjusted.
The specifications contrast this construction to H.A. Gilmore's Apr. 6, 1858 pipe tongs (pat. no. 19,842), which could jam. James M. Evarts mentions this patent in a pipe tongs patent granted July 7, 1868 (no. 79,642). |
