Description: |
The sliding jaw adjustment is held in position by a laterally sliding toothed wedge-shaped key that engages teeth cut in the wrench shank. Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1859 "Scientific American" listing for the McKenzie combination screwdriver and quick adjust wrench.
One known example is marked " J. M. [Mc?] KENZIE PAT.D May 11, 1858 " -- It does not have a screwdriver on the end, nor a socket where one could have been inserted. Examples with the socket are also extant. |
