Description:
This is a bevel gage which uses a notched index plate with a corresponding spring-loaded detent to accurately hold the bar at a specific angle to the head. Notches are provided for each 5 degree increment from 0 to 180 degrees.

Interestingly, the choice of fixed five-degree increments limits the usefulness of this tool. Common architectural figures like octagons (22.5 degrees) and pentagons (36 degrees) are not possible settings for this tool.

Known examples are marked "Bley's Adjustable Mitre Gauge" on the index wheel, along with the patent date.
