Description: |
First patent listed for a "pocket level" typically used for attaching to framing and try squares. A spring catch is used to hold the level in place along with "bearers" which establish the horizontal plane for the level. Known examples are marked under the vial: S. J. SHERMAN, NEW YORK / PATENTED JULY 19th, 1853 and uses a set screw instead of a spring catch arrangement for securing the level. The use of of a set screw is inferred with the reissue of this patent, RE374. |
