Description: |
This gage bear striking resemblance to the Phillips' Patent (61,248), with two independantly adjustable heads on opposite sides of the bar. On this piece, however, instead of the "H"-shaped bar, it uses a hollow tube with a slot in it to allow the heads to slide.
In addition, this piece adds a third marking point which references off the end of the bar, allowing it to be used for butt mortise marking. All in all, this is a fairly nice, compact butt gage.
It is interesting to note that known examples of the tool are marked with the manufacturer name "Goncas" and not "Joncas". The patent application indicates that Mr. Joncas was illiterate, as the signature contains "X - His Mark". My guess is that the patent application uses an anglicized spelling of the inventor's name. |
