| The main feature of the patent is the main shank which is initially extended in a "T" shape, with a threaded portion at the end, and then bent back upon itself to form a frame for wood slab handle sides and the screw for the jaw adjustment. Compare Otto Stechhan patent no. 644,263 assigned to Indianapolis Drop Forging Co.

Bates' subsequent patent (no. 690,391) uses two pieces to accomplish a similar handle and adjusting screw for a nut wrench.
According to toolarchives.com, Bates was a superintendent for the Indianapolis Drop Forging Company, and sued the company over financial dealings involving these patents. |
