| Patented in 1862, and quite successful in the marketplace, the Evans patent was certainly the first commercially viable metallic compass plane. Roger Smith observes in his first book that Stanley may have purchased the operations of the Mitchell firm. He does not elaborate, but this plane bears a striking resemblance to the mechanism on Stanley's No. 13 compass plane, which entered their product line in 1871, approximately the time that Mitchell & Company ceased operations (Courtesy of Martin J. Evans subsequently patented an improvement to this plane 41983 wherein he used curved connecting rods. The connecting rods are the parts that connect the flexible sole to the stock and can be seen as element "I" in the patent picture. |
