Description:
This invention uses a three-sided cutter to cut a multi-sided hole. A guide-plate determines the shape and size of the hole to be cut. This type of cutter proved to be quite useful when cutting softer materials such as wood or brass, and was not rendered completely obsolete until the advent of CNC machining; in general, though, broaching was preferred in most applications so this invention, though long-lived, was probably not very lucrative for the inventor.

The 1870-01-01 issue of Scientific American mentioned that this inventor received British patent GB-186,903,211 on 1869-11-05, for a boring tool. This was for "provisional protection for six months."
