Description:
The patent describes two features. The first is a "quill" or metal sleeve, which transfers pressure from the load-bearing ferule to the end nut of a wood-handles "Coes" wrench. The second is the axle of the adjusting rosette extending through the ferule shoulder and being fitted with a threaded end and second threaded nut to be used as an adjustment lock.

Herb Page's 2005 book, "The Brothers Coes and Their Legacy of Wrenches," notes the support sleeve feature in this patent was used on some L. Coes & Co. wrenches in the early 1880s. It is described in early 1880's hardware trade journals and an L. Coes & Co. listing in the 1884 WORCESTER DIRECTORY.

Aspects of this patent were incorporated into a broader 1870 English patent (GB-187000904) which also has features from other Taft wrench patents.
