Description:
The adjusting nut has threads beveled on one side, and is integral with a pin which can move at the lower end. The pin is pushed toward the wrench shank by a spring. The beveled threads allow the movable jaw to slide toward the closed position. A sliding jaw piece between the fixed and adjustable jaws has an angled face with pipe gripping teeth facing the adjustable jaw, and a flat jaw face for nuts. The patent also includes a rotating screwdriver blade at the end of the handle. The wrench was manufactured without the screwdriver feature.

It was advertised and sold while the patent was pending. Ten inch example marked THE WAKEFIELD WRENCH 10 INCH NUT & PIPE PAT MAY 5, 1908. Many known examples have an additional marking for FAIRBANKS GAS & GASOLENE ENGINES.
