Description:
XC patents are Canadian patents issued between 1824 and 1869. We do not have much information on the patent itself but we have some information on the inventor and his invention. See also Nova Scotia patent NS-55, which is for the same invention.

A level (see photos) is marked, "Cole's Gravitating Plumb & Level / Patented July 13 1858 / Manufactured by / Andrew N. Cole, Brockville, C. W." C. W. is Canada West, which between 1841 and 1867 was the name for what is now Ontario. At the Fourteenth Annual Provincial Exhibition of the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada, held in September 1859, Andrew N. Cole of Brockville exhibited his gravitating plumb and level, winning a diploma and $4.

Andrew Norton Cole was born in Brockville 4 September 1832, son of Abel and Catherine Cole. The 1851 Census shows Andrew N. Cole, age 20, living in Brockville, Canada West. His occupation was "insurance agent". The 1861 census found him in Nichol Township, Wellington County; no profession, trade or occupation is listed. We cannot find him in the 1871 Canada Census although 1872 patents place him in Brockville at that time. 1881 US patent 249,965, for a lantern chimney, was assigned in part to an Andrew N. Cole of New York, who may or may not be the same Andrew N. Cole.

A genealogy website shows that Andrew Norton Cole's father, Abel Cole, lived 1805 to 1893, and his mother, Catherine Seaman, lived 1810-1893. No death date is recorded for Andrew. He was married to Olive Sprague Langford, born 1838, death date unknown.
