| The inventor was employed at J. A. Fay & Co. at the time but it is not known if they used this patent. It is interesting as well because it contains the names of both G. V. Orton and L. O. Orton. Gerrit Van Zandt Orton was born in Hamilton, Ohio in 1834. His younger brother, Lyman Osgood Orton, was born in Eaton, NY in 1839. Gerrit definitely worked for J. A. Fay & Co., and Lyman most likely did. By the mid-1880s, Gerrit, who seems to have moved around a fair bit, was perhaps in San Francisco where a Gerrit V. Orton worked for Williams & Orton (the titular Orton was Collins K. Orton, whose father was Gerrit Van Zandt Orton, and it seems quite plausible that Collins K. Orton's father is one and the same as the inventor of this current patent and also the Gerrit V. Orton who worked for Williams & Orton in 1899). In the early 1870s Lyman moved to Philadelphia where he joined the firm of Richards, London & Kelley, operators of The Atlantic Works. In July of 1877, Lyman became a full partner and the company name changed to London, Berry & Orton, and then, in 1888, Berry & Orton. |
