Description:
This machine is designed, specifically, to upset the gouge shape cutting lips of Cook's patent bits. A spring loaded shaft in conjunction with a cam on the drive shaft, engages and disengages the die with the bit. A pin on the bevel gear rotates the shaft and die a quarter-turn to twist the lips, then automatically disengages. Auger bits, made by the James Swan Co., were marked with this patent date.

Assigned to Richard P. Bruff in second re-issue, October 21, 1873.
