On the surface, this appears to be a fairly simple machinists'
center marking gage, but there is some incredible complexity
behind this seemingly simple piece. What is unusual on this piece
is that the end fence is fixed, and turning the screw on the end
of the arm moves both the center point and the second fence,
while always maintaining the perfect center relationship!
To accomplish this, the fence screw runs on a coarse "Acme"
(square-groove) thread, while the center point runs on a
finer-pitch thread cut into the outside of the coarser thread!
The finer thread is exactly one half the pitch of the coarse
thread, so that the movement of the center point is always
one-half the movement of the fence, ensuring a perfect center
alignment.
