Description:
The title is self-explanatory. The lock release is a bulge on one or more of the folding tools that releases the catch for all the tools in the set, to either fold one open or closed.

The patent text and references comprise a history and critique of "Leatherman type" folding tools, and locking mechanisms for fold-out tool blades. This patent evolved from a broad concept which resulted in patent nos. 5,963,999, 5,791,002, 5,781,950, and this patent.

The patent appears together with 5,781,950 on the combination tool bearing handle of the VISE-GRIP (tm) TOOLBOX (tm) locking pliers combination tool. As of early 2008, the tool no longer appears in the VISE-GRIP (tm) or SCHRADE (tm) product lines.
