Description:
According to the specifications, this second Merrick screw wrench patent has extensions of the moveable jaw fixed into a groove in the adjusting nut, the jaws close at a slight angle and the surface of one jaw was roughened so the wrench would grip pipe as well as flat sided objects.

Known example marked, "H. Foot & Co. Merrick's Pat." has the connection between the adjusting nut and movable jaw, but the jaws are parallel and do not appear to have pipe gripping serrations.

Another wrench conforming to this patent's design is marked CYRUS FISHER CANTON MASS. Fisher apparently was in the carriage building trade. His name appears as exhibitor of "coach wrenches" at a Sept. 1841 Boston show, and he had carriage related patents in the 1860s.
