Nova Scotia (NS) patents were issued between 1834 and 1867, when they joined with Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick to form the Dominion of Canada.From the 1980 book, Patents of Nova Scotia, Pre Confederation, 1834 to 1869 by Gordon G. Phillips. "James Stitt of Prescott in the County of Granville in Upper Canada, bailiff, for apparatus for distilling oil from coal, 28 Jan. 1860."Petition to #8—not dated."Oath—sworn before (---), commissioner, at Prescott, Canada West, 6 Dec. 1859."Specification (with drawing)—processes heretofore used for destructive distillation of coal and other substances yielding pyrogenous oils used stationary retorts requiring low heat to avoid production of permanent gases that cannot be converted into oilyvapours so that operation is slow --- applicants retort has a rotary or other equivalent motion for agitating contents to expose all portions of the charge equally to the fire with the low red heat about 850°F --- this produces more oily vapours in less time.Witnesses—John Reid and Rindge."Assignment—to Alfred Brown apparently of Montreal." |
