Nova Scotia (NS) patents were issued between 1834 and 1867, when they joined with Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick to form the Dominion of Canada.From the 1980 book, Patents of Nova Scotia, Pre Confederation, 1834 to 1869 by Gordon G. Phillips. "No. 52 - Robert Frederick Findlay, presently of the City of Halifax, master mariner, for a method of reducing or taking in royals of top gallant sails and resetting them, 1859."Petition to #9—petitioner is a master mariner and has no permanent resident but has resided in Nova Scotia and is at present residing in Halifax—not dated."Oath—sworn before Andrew Shiels, J.P., at Halifax 21 Oct 1859."Specification (no drawing) - a rope secured to the masthead and rove through a lizard on the tie and attached to the head of the sail, another rope wove through the quarter block and sheave hole of the yard, the standing part being made fast to the doublings of the mast, a spilling line leading from the deck passing through a block at the heal of the mast and passing round both leaches and through a bull's eye in the bunt of the sail so that by letting go of the haulyards the head of the sail comes in and on the same principle by hoisting the yard the sail is set ——— .
