Description:
The end of the "fixed" jaw is hinged, and held in line by a spring. This allows for "ratchet" action on nut, or gripping and releasing action on pipe when the jaw faces have teeth.

Canadian patent CA-41,791 (February 2, 1893) is parallel for the same design.
