Vintage Machinery entry for Emerson Electric Co.
Description:
Emerson was founded in 1890 by Charles and Alexander Meston. John Wesley Emerson was their principal investor. They claim that in 1892 they sold the first electric fans in America but we have seen an 1883 catalog from Bergman & Co. of New York that shows electric desk and pedestal fans (they are far from the only company to claim that "first"). From about 1948 Emerson began making tools and machinery for Sears, Roebuck & Co. In 1962 Emerson became the primary supplier of such products to Sears, and that relationship continued until 1998.
