Description:
The wrench has a swinging hook-jaw, with an adjustable pivot point including a pawl that engages a rack in an elongated slot in the handle. A known example matches the patent drawing, but is not marked. Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" assumes Spery produced them.

Spery's "pliers-type" pipe tongs (pat. No. 444,923) incorporates a spring-loaded pawl as a movable fulcrum.
