Description:
One of the more famous early patents for toilet paper. It is not, however, the first such patent. The inventor's 1872 patent 128,992 covers an early fan-fold toilet paper. His 1884 patent 297,043 is for a toilet paper roll holder. 1885 patent 333,183 is for a conventional toilet-paper roll with perforations.

"A difficulty with rolls of this character as heretofore manufactured has been due to the width of the bond uniting the sheets, which it has been necessary to make of considerable strength to withstand the tension of winding, but which it is desirable should be as frail as may be when the roll is unwound, otherwise the sheets to not separate with certainty and many of them are torn..."
