Description:
This is a very interesting special-purpose gage, designed for marking off a fixed distance from an irregular surface. The patent drawing shows it being used to mark off the skirting board for stairs, but it can also be used for any general purpose scribing.

This gage works somewhat differently than most other marking gages. In this piece the head holds the arm perpendicular, but the arm remains free to slide in and out. This allows the point at the end of the arm to follow the irregular surface, while an adjustable marking point halfway up the arm marks the same profile on the workpiece.

The same inventor later patented an improvement to this tool (50484 - 10/17/1865).
