Description:
This convertible desk and sewing machine cabinet was sold by Sears, Roebuck & Co. as their Model 566.341 cabinet. The mechanism is quite ingenious. When configured as a desk, there are no obvious visual clues that there is a sewing machine concealed within because the sewing machine lies sideways below the surface of the desk where it is concealed by a drawer front. To convert it to sewing-machine use, the front edge of the desk is lifted and pushed rearward; the entire top slides back and behind the desk. At the same time, a mechanism lifts the sewing machine, rotating it upright and then locking it in place.
