This is the first of several patents for wheel-based lumber measures. This particular one is nothing like a traditional board rule, which may have limited its popularity since most subsequent designs (such as those by A.M. Olds-- 43,789 and #45,741) used this type of mechanism attached to a more typical lumber stick.
