Description:
A rule joint in the adjustable jaw of a pipe wrench similar to the Bartholomew and Merrick Jan. 2, 1849 patent (no. 6,002) allows the jaw to "bite" either to loosen or tighten pipe or other round objects.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" notes an 1863 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN mention of KEARNEY'S PATENT WRENCH.
