Description:
This method of manufacturing reamers unites a mild-steel shank portion to a high-speed steel cutter portion. Two-part construction is much lower cost than making the entire reamer from high-speed steel, and was already in widespread use at the time of the patent. This patent's manufacturing process avoids brazing or welding to unite the pieces but rather presses them together; the high-speed steel portion has hardened cutting edges on its end plus a longitudinally knurled section. These edges cut into the mild steel, with the square portion providing torque transmission and the knurled portion providing rigidity and strength.
