Description:
The claimed invention is a carriage which holds the cutter, and a screw which allows it to be adjusted for depth. The carriage is secured to the stock via a tube-shaped projection on the bottom which fits into a corresponding socket in the bed of the plane. This tube and socket fit allows some wiggle room to adjust the cutter to line up with the bearing surface at the mouth.

A combined clamp/capiron is provided which can be placed near the cutting edge of the cutter to act as a capiron, or moved back so the cutter acts as a single cutter. The Rusts say an important part of their invention is that this clamp and its adjustment in relation to the cutting edge remain the same when the depth is adjusted via the carriage. Planes of this patent are known with the lateral adjustment mechanism of 423424.
