Description:
The wrench frame has two sliding jaw segments held in the frame by a wire pin. The jaw segment could be removed and replaced. The patented features are the screw with thumb wheel, and the sliding key that attaches the screw to one of the movable jaws.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" presumes Phillips produced this wrench based on an 1878 notice of the patent in July 6, 1878 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, but the notice includes "entire patent is for sale."
