3,709 in Abridgments of Specifications (1869)
Description:
The patent presents a variety of arrangements for a screw-adjustable jaw on a nut wrench. The drawings in the abridged specifications show four variants and the text hints at several more. A digitized copy of the full patent [https://www.google.com/books/edition/English_Patents_of_Inventions_Specificat/ly7nb7f6xycC , search for "Asbury'} includes 13 pages of text and four sheets of plates. Asbury is listed as a stock & die and wrench maker in contemporary Birmingham directories.

A known ASBURY wrench has markings that correspond to a Febr.11, 1867 "Registered Design" (#4842) but that physically resembles the wrench in the the drawings. Asbury received "Registered Design" #4876 for another screw wrench on Aug. 10, 1867. (See the entry for Asbury in Ron Geesin's THE ADJUSTABLE SPANNER for other Asbury designs.)

Note: Early British patents (pre 1916) were numbered by the year and started at patent #1 at the start of each year in January. The patent # used in DATAMP represents the year of registration and the patent # (with "leading zeros" interposed to make the number total nine digits). This patent is #3,709 of the year 1869.
