Wikipedia article on Aveling and Porter
Description:
Note: English patents before 1916 were numbered by the year and started at patent #1 at the start of each year in January. The patent number used in DATAMP represents the year of issue of the application and the yearly patent number. This patent is #1,955 of the year 1859.

"This invention consists in an arrangement of apparatus for tightening and taking up the 'slack' of endless chains used in rotating the running wheels of locomotives or traction engines..."

This was one in a short series of patents related to Aveling's invention of the traction engine, which he created by mounting a portable steam engine on a carriage and powering the wheels via a chain between crankshaft and rear axle. Eight years later he would also invent the steamroller.

In 1862 the inventor would co-found Aveling and Porter to manufacture steam engines and, later, steamrollers.
