British patent corresponding to U.S. patent 8,922 granted to Andrew Hotchkiss on May 14, 1852. The design appears in some 19th Century British tool catalogs as "American pattern."

As provided in British patent options of the period, J. T. Pitman was a British patent agent.

An account in the April 1855-March 1856 volume of PRACTICAL MECHANICS JOURNAL (Glasgow & London) names the U.S. manufacturer.
