Description:
The inventor's surname is spelled "Battel" on this patent but his earlier patents used the spelling "Battle".

This boat is, at first glance, a convention paddle-boat with the paddle-wheel mounted amidship. However, in shallow water the paddle-wheel is meant to push directly against the bottom of the river- or canal-bed.
