Description: |
| The smoothing iron (sad iron, pressing iron) improvements was a "thin case or slipper" that protected the sole of the iron from smoke and helped, somewhat, to reduce hot spots. In addition the handle was separate so that it can be kept cool while the iron is heating. The plane-iron improvement is to make it out of iron and then hammer or roll it to create a "vacancy", a long rabbet, that is filled by soldering in a thin piece of steel. |
