Inventor Wheeler had apparently built and demonstrated his inventions in the Netherlands and had obtained patents in Holland and West Vriesland for those inventions.

One list of patents names William Wheeler as the sole recipient of this patent; an 1857 "Subject-matter Index of Patents Applied For and Patents Granted" from the Patent Office of Great Britain, also names John Crupley and gives the title only as "Boring timber with a wooden auger".
