GILMER TIRE REPAIR PLIERS - 1913 ad (FLICKR)
Description:
Advertised as a tire repair tool, the patent describes a form of pliers with jaws that could function either in a gripping or spreading function.

One jaw is attached to a loop handle; the second handle has a latch that can engage teeth on a rack on the loop handle to hold the position of the jaws. The parts are formed of metal stampings. The Feb. 13, 1912 patent date on one known example reflects an earlier version of the tool with three handles based on patent no. 1,017,093. Gilmer overextended with an extensive advertising campaign and his company was forced into bankruptcy.

For a competing tire repair "cut spreader," see patent no. 1,074,058 produced as the NATIONAL PRIER.
