Vintage Machinery entry for Mantle & Co.
Description:
The patent has five pages of drawings and five pages of text. The unifying principle is layers of segments with circular bases that would move when pressure was applied. The claims use the phrase "self-conforming bearing." Examples of use described in the patent include vise with jaws that would conform to irregular shapes, and a chair that would conform to the seated body.

A machinist's vise with shape-conforming jaws based on this patent was advertised by Mantle & Co. (New York) in 1923. It appears MANTLE & Co. sold production of the vise including patterns and production equipment in 1928. A YouTube video showing restoration of a MANTLE vise is instructive.
