Description:
This patent is the first US patent granted under revised patent legislation that was passed in July 1836. The numbers were actually assigned beginning in 1837 and they chose this particular patent to be patent number 1 because inventor John Ruggles was a US Senator who was instrumental in passing that revised patent legislation. Ruggles would also chair the Senate Committee that studied the impact of the December 1836 fire in the Patent Office (Senate Report No. 58, 24th Congress, 2nd Session).
