The pivoting angle piece forming the bearing for the adjusting knurl is the distinctive feature of the Cochran pipe wrench. It is an improvement on Cochran's January 25, 1898 patent (no. 597,762). It received further refinement in patent no. 1,071,703.
Detailed research shows the earliest COCHRAN pipe wrenches were produced by Kilborn & Bishop at New Haven, CT until Cochran could build their own plant in Chicago.
