| The inventor hired young attorney Charles T. Porter as his patent attorney, giving him a half-share in the patent as payment. Porter, who had no mechanical background or training, recognized some shortcomings in Hastings' design, gave himself a crash course on mechanics and then made improvements to this machine, resulting in his patent 11,492. Still not satisfied with the quality of the stone surface he was getting, Porter realized that speed variations in the engine driving his stone-dressing machine was causing ripples in the surface, which led him to develop an ingenious new speed governor for steam engines, which proved to be an improvement of considerable importance. He began manufacturing his governor and would later play a key role in the development of high-speed steam engines. Porter also manufactured his high-speed steam engines, and is now considered to be one of the key innovators in the evolution of both governors and steam engines. |
