Description:
In manufacturing sheet metal, finish sanding of thicknesses less than 0.026 inches (0.66 mm) caused buckling of the sheet. The method previously used was to have pinch rollers push a web of sheet metal below a rapidly driven abrasive belt, with an idler roller ("billy roll") pressing the sheet metal against the abrasive belt. The pushing of the pinch rollers before the belt caused the sheet metal to buckle when pushed against the outfeed pinch rollers. The improvement is to drive the billy roll at the same speed as the pinch rolls, which is less than that of the abrasive belt. With this improvement sheet metal as thin as 0.012 inches (0.30 mm) can be successfully finished.
