Description: |
James Baird Handyside was a partner in the firm of Thomson, Sterne, and Co., Ltd., which manufactured railway components such as buffers and springs. This patent included nine large drawing sheets, illustrating the key points of the invention as applied to eleven different applications: (1) as an accessory for lathe work, (2) for grinding band pulleys, (3) as a surface grinder, (4) as a duplex surface grinder, (5), for grinding spinning-machine drums, (6) for grinding straight knives such as for shearing machines, (7) for grinding axle bushes, (8) for grinding small articles such as reaper knives or smoothing irons, (9) for grinding railway-vehicle axle-box guides, (10) for grinding gear teeth, and (11) a portable grinder for conical points such as lathe centers. The inventor was presumably related in some way to Andrew Handyside who operated the Britannia Foundry in Derby, and to Charles Baird, a noted engineer who worked mostly in Russia. At least three people have had the name James Baird Handyside; we believe that our inventor of this name died in 1882.Other patents granted to James Baird Handyside have not been entered into our database but are recorded here.
