Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for A. & F. Brown & Co.
|
Description: |
The 1872-01-06 Scientific American, page 19, has an illustrated article on this "Improved Safety Governor", which was "invented and manufactured by August P. Brown, 57 Lewis street, New York... for particulars address A. P. Brown, as above." The patent itself identifies the inventor as Augustus Brown, no middle initial. We have added the middle initial because most of Brown's other patents included it.The partnership of A. & F. Brown, established 1854, consisted of brothers Adolphus and Felix Brown. The business was reorganized in 1887 as A. & F. Brown Co., with Felix Brown, Sr. owning 70 percent with the remainder divided evenly between Augustus P. Brown, Felix Brown, Jr., and Charles Brown. The address given in the aforementioned 1872 Scientific American article was the location of the Progress Machine Works operated by A. & F. Brown. |
