Description: |
This mechanism replaces a spline drive. The axially-moving driven shaft has an overlapping-cylinders cross-section, and the quill has a matching hole. The peculiar overlapping-groove construction allows the driven shaft to be machined on a lathe using two pairs of centers, each slightly offset from the original center of the shaft. The hole in the quill is formed by similarly offset boring operations. In this way, both quill and shaft can be manufactured entirely on a lathe. |
