Description:
Inventor Clemens had earlier been with sawmill maker A. B. Holabird of Cincinnati, but this and subsequent patents were not assigned to Holabird. Apparently Clemens joined the Army during the Civil War (in 1865 he was a Captain and Assistant quartermaster stationed in Tennessee) and remained with the Army for some years afterwards. There is no evidence he ever returned to the employ of A. B. Holabird, although he did return to Cincinnati.
