Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for Shepard Iron Works
|
Description: |
The 1875 Buffalo City Directory has an ad from "John D. Shepard, Manufacturer of builders' hardware and small iron castings, 128 Chicago Street." The ad shows "Shepard's new surface gate hinge & latch to swing both ways." The firm of John D. Shepard would become the Shepard Hardware Company. The 1884 book, "History of the City of Buffalo and Erie County" says, "The present works of the Shepard Hardware Company were established in 1866... About two hundred hands are employed. Although for years the business had been conducted chiefly by the sons of the proprietor, viz: Charles G. Shepard and Walter J. Shepard, the father remained the nominal head until January, 1878; since then the sons have been sole proprietors. The products of the establishment are hardware specialties of almost every description." In 1847 John D. Shepard had earlier established the Shepard Iron Works, makers of steam engines and sawmill machinery among other items. |
