Description: |
Quick / self-adjust wrench comprised of stamped pieces, as shown in the patent drawings. The internal spring pulls the jaws closed and the thumb lever on the handle latches the wrench when the size is adjusted. The thumb lever has to be depressed to allow the jaws to open. The description describes a mode of one-handed operation which requires very quick reflexes to accomplish. (Photos shared by a descendant show Mr. Pollock had lost his left arm.) The version manufactured was the nut wrench with supplemental pipe gripping jaw.
Contemporary trade accounts and markings on the tools show the wrench initially made at Galesburg, Illinois with later production by the Wisconsin Stamped Steel Company of Madison, Wisconsin.
To date no comparable U.S. patent has been found. Corresponding British patent GB-190608851 and incorporation of a production company at Galesburg in 1905 show Pollock had been working on the idea for some time. |
