The reissue has an improved description of the then-current state of the art, and a clearer explanation of the novelty of Sloan's new design: the threaded portion of the screw is mostly cylindrical, but close to the end of the screw it tapers to a point. The threads are of constant pitch. The combination of these three things was new, and constitute what we think of as the modern wood-screw.

The patent was extended for seven years.
