Description: |
The wrench has an intermediate jaw with a pipe gripping tooth on one face, and a smooth surface on the other. The intermediate jaw can be attached to either the fixed "hook jaw" or the flat faced movable jaw by means of a spring wire loop. The intermediate jaw can be slipped off and the pipe tooth inserted directly in the movable flat jaw to increase the wrench's capacity. The swinging handle moves the base of the adjusting screw, which is especially important when the wrench is used as a pipe wrench.
Known examples are pipe wrenches with the pipe tooth directly on the movable jaw. On one the only readable marking is "PAT'D." Another is marked, "PAT AUG. 10, 1875" and "WARRANTED CAST STEEL" on opposite sides of the upper jaw.
Some have been stamped with the Jan. 26, 1869 patent date corresponding to J.C. Rowe patent no. 86,322, but that design uses a different size adjustment principle. |
