Description: |
The ratchet action is generated by the end of a spring steel rod which also forms the handle and frame of the wrench. Produced in a range of sizes, with hex and square openings, for use directly as a ratchet wrench, or as the ratchet handle for a ratchet and socket set. The supplemental handle shown on the second page of the drawings may never have been produced.
The wrench was already produced and advertised by January 1907. Some were overstamped with the names of early tire manufacturers and supplied as rim bolt wrenches for use with early demountable rim automotive wheels.
A socket wrench set using this ratchet is described in William Barnes' June 21, 1921 patent (no. 1,381,900). The design in this patent also appears in George A. Cutter's Dec. 8, 1908 patent no. 905,992. Cutter filed application after the Walden ratchet was produced and marketed, but was granted his patent before Walden's was granted. |
